Sealdah Court to pronounce quantum of punishment to Sanjay Roy at around 1445 hrs today

Kolkata, Jan 20 (UNI) The Sealdah Civil and Criminal Sessions Court will pronounce the quantum of punishment to convict Civic Volunteer Sanjay Roy in the 31-year-old woman doctor's rape and murder case at 1445 hours on Monday, court sources said.
Additional and Sessions judge Justice Anirban Das, who convicted Roy on
Saturday after brief hearing in relation to brutal rape and murder,
will pronounce the quantum of punishment in the second hour at court room 210.
During hearing of the day, Roy, Civic Volunteer attached to the Kolkata
Police, again told the court that he was innocent and he was made a
sacrificial goat in the crime, in which he neither raped nor murdered
the doctor.
Roy reiterated that if he did the crime then his rudraksha garland
would have torn.
The 31-year-old woman 2nd year post graduate trainee resident doctor
was found raped and murdered at her working place in the morning of
August 9 where she went to rest at the cardiact department 2nd floor
seminar room after doing her 36 hours work at a stretch.
CBI counsel Anurag Modi said Roy's crime was the rarest and the
convict should be given the capital punishment.
The advocate, who appeared for the victim's parents, Anurag Dey also
demanded the death sentence for Roy.
The judge during the hearing said the victim was serving for the
people and she was not after money and the Civic Volunteer, who was
supposed to ensure the security of the people involved in the crime.
Court sources said the judge holding court for about 44 minutes said
he will come back at 14 45 hours to pronounce the quantum of sentence,
court sources added.
